RGPAS is celebrating achieving SCIO Charity Status!

As far back in 2019, RGPAS talked about finding ways of expanding; to apply for, and independently administer essential project funding; to occasionally be able to pay people to carry out administrative / project work and importantly, to be able to continue to serve its members in very difficult times. The best and by far the safest way to do this was to become a charity. Well, at long last – we’re delighted to announce that we’ve done it. With just a little bit of help from TSI Highland.

RGPAS is now what is known as a ‘SCIO’ – short for Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation. SCIO is a legal form unique to Scottish charities and can enter into contracts, employ staff, incur debts, own property, sue and be sued.  It also provides a high degree of protection against liability.

What does this mean for members? The changes are not immediately obvious. A new constitution was approved unanimously at the 2023 AGM and instead of a committee, we have a Board of Charity Trustees who are legally responsible for the control of activities and financial reporting. The rules have changed a little for example, the ‘old committee’ used to step down every year to be voted in. Now, for better continuity, the Trustees will serve a three-year term.  There are new clauses in place to protect the Trustees and Members too.

RGPAS is also now a member of SCVO – The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations. This enables us to apply for any specific funding that will support our aims as an organisation which were clearly set out in our application and can be found on the RGPAS website.

We are currently in the process of making applications for project funding and will keep members posted on progress. Also, don’t forget – as a member of RGPAS you can claim tax relief on your subscription now we have SCIO status!

The legal Charity Trustees are: Dr. Alida MacGregor as Chair, Dr Charlie Siderfin as Treasurer, and Dr Kate Dawson as Secretary. There are several non-official board members who make up the steering committee (as was) and a business support manager to help keep things running as smoothly as possible.

If you would like any more information on being a SCIO or SCVO it’s best to check their online resources here – we are also eligible for expert guidance support from these organisations and we intend to make good use of our membership.

Thank you for giving us your unanimous support to make this momentous change.
